We spent the afternoon roving Chicago's South Side, Midway, Little Italy, and Pilsen neighborhoods.
A local guided us to an Italian beef shack, Scatchell's, that was something of a neighborhood institution. The locale specializes in hoagie-style sandwiches loaded with roast beef, sausage or, as in the case with Will's and my order, a Combo that jams both into six inches of bread. The sandwich is dipped in the beef's au jus and then dressed with a mix of celery and peppers.
As the accompanying photos will attest, the sandwich is unwieldy and Will grease up everything in sight. As for flavor, I found it to be a guilty pleasure, on par with a cheesesteak in Philly, for its juicy meat cuts and savory condiments. Will, was less impressed, bothered by the greasiness and fast food feel.
All in all, its worth trying simply to test your heart's stability in the face of a potentially cardiac-arrest-inducing behemoth.
